Renewable energy is the basis of Sustainable Development

Use of renewable energy is the basis and community involvement is the key to achieve sustainable development.” said Dr. Christian Casillas, a renewable energy expert and educator from University of Berkeley, USA, in a two days workshop organised jointly by RIWATCH and Intaya Public School, Roing from 30 June to 01 July 2013.

“Solar empowerment of Youth” was the theme of the workshop. Total 20 students from Govt. Higher Secondary and Intaya Public School attended the workshop. “We read renewable energy but it was virtually hand on experience, practically working with tools and equipments, measuring voltage and watts. Having scientific outlook is not a barrier for students of art stream.” Expressed Jihu Tacho, one of the participant of Intaya Public School.

The workshop was also addressed by Dipti Vaghela, a specialist in mini-micro hydel programmes in Orissa. With her Power Point presentation, she said “Mini or micro hydel is the best solution for energy crisis in a hilly state like Arunachal”

The workshop was fully activity oriented. The participants installed solar panels, did wiring, light fittings and also learnt repairing and maintenance. Considering constraints of students community where there is no light, Dr. Cassilas handed over eight solar powered mini lamps for RIWATCH Center for Rural Sustainability for it’s community initiative programme and library movement, contributed by Thrive Energy Technologies, Hyderabad, under their programme “One child, One Light.”
